What are the advantages of practicing Hebrew on the phone?
One-on-one sessions on the phone give you no option but to speak. Many learners might feel embarrassed to talk a foreign language out loud in front of a teacher. Speaking Hebrew on the phone allows you to feel more comfortable, as if you were chatting with a friend. You can take your Ivritalk session everywhere, at home or outside. You don’t need to sit by the computer or travel to a classroom. The atmosphere of the sessions is friendly and supportive.
How can I remember what I have learned over a phone conversation?
Every Ivritalk session is backed up by a written feedback that is sent to your inbox. You don’t need to write during the sessions, and you are not expected to remember everything that is said during the sessions. The tutors take notes during the sessions. They write new vocabulary items that were used in the sessions, and they document the corrections that they made. All of this and more is emailed to you. Once you get the written feedback, you can continue to work on your Hebrew at home – review the vocabulary and comments, use the new vocabulary in texts that you would write on your own and more.
How does it work?
The Ivritalk tutor contacts you, by phone or skype, at the chosen date. During the session it is just you and you and your personal tutor:
No interruptions of other learners,
Talking and learning at your paste,
Chatting about subjects that you are interested in and that are important to you,
The Ivritalk tutor knows what you did in the last session, and plans with you the next session.
Why is it important to learn Hebrew upon immigrating to Israel?
Hebrew is an official language of The State of Israel – the language of the education system and the bureaucracy, the language you must feel comfortable in if you want to work in most fields, the language in which the people use for all types of communication. Hebrew is also the main language of the Israeli culture, and it ties Israelis together much more than any other cultural aspect. If you want to assimilate successfully in the Israeli society, you must know Hebrew.
How to use the easy Hebrew dialogues of the course?
One type of learning aid we use in our Hebrew for Immigration course is dialogues. These dialogues are all written in standard Israeli Hebrew that you will hear across Israel. At first, you will practice the dialogues, learn the vocabulary and understand the context in which Israelis use the phrases in them. The next stage would be to be to apply the contents to real life situations. Working with the dialogues and simulating conversations with your Hebrew tutor will have you speaking the same Hebrew that the Israelis around you speak.
How can this course contribute to people who are already familiar with Israel and the Hebrew language?
Many of you may a have background in Hebrew studies from Sunday School or other institutions where Hebrew is taught outside of Israel. You must keep in mind that knowing how to read, write and speak a language outside of the place where it is spoken in society is very different from the way the language is used by its community. Your background is the base of everything else that you will study in Hebrew. However, it can’t replace a deeper introduction to the language that Israelis actually use. Our tutors are all native speakers of modern Israeli Hebrew and qualified Hebrew teachers. Speaking with them the language they use as part of their everyday lives gives you a better idea of what Hebrew sounds like and how to use it properly in Israel.
